On the morning of 4 July 1991, Chang was shot twice in the head in a failed extortion attempt.[16][17] His body was found slumped in the gutter next to his Mercedes-Benz 500SL in the Sydney suburb of Mosman.[3][18] Two Malaysian men, Chew Seng (Ah Sung) Liew and Choon Tee (Phillip) Lim, [19] picked Chang at random from a magazine featuring Asians who had 'made it good' in Australia.[3] They ran their Toyota Corolla into Chang's vehicle, forcing him to pull over.[3] After getting into an argument with Chang, who refused to give them money, Liew fired the fatal shots.[16] The first shot entered near the right cheek and exited below the right ear while the fatal second, fired from point-blank range, entered the right temple and passed through the brain. Police investigators initially suspected the involvement of Triad syndicates but later concluded the killing was an amateur act.[17][20]

In 1984, Chang founded the Victor Chang Foundation to grant funds in two areas that he felt passionate about: education and innovation in the fields of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. The foundation continues today under the leadership of his daughter Vanessa Chang.

On 15 February 1994, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, a body intended to focus on researching "the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart muscle diseases,"[27] was launched by Prime Minister Paul Keating with Kerry Packer as its patron.[28] The "Dr Victor Chang Science Labs" in Christian Brothers' High School are named after him.[29] In 1999, Prime Minister John Howard announced Chang as Australian of the Century at the People's Choice Awards after a decision between two Australian larrikins and two lifesavers. Swimmer Dawn Fraser, cricketer Donald Bradman, and ophthalmologist Fred Hollows were other contenders.[30]

In St Vincent's Hospital, the Victor Chang Lowy Packer Building was established in 2008 with $35 million from the state government and $45 million in corporate and private donations.[31] Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark officially opened the building and declared that Chang "was an original thinker and saw the need for research and the development of heart assist devices and, not least, he is known for his legendary caring for his patients and their families".[32] In Time magazine's "A Golden Anniversary" article, which lists people who have shaped the last "50 Years in the South Pacific" (1959–2009), Chang was listed as the figure of 1979–1989.[5]

In 2017, a Sydney Ferries Emerald-class ferry was named Victor Chang.[33]

Minor planet 24450 was named after him.[34]

Personal life[edit]

Chang met his wife Ann Simmons in 1966. He was the on-call emergency physician at St. Anthony's Hospital in North Cheam, London, where Ann took herself after being taken unwell at a party.[8] They had 3 children: Vanessa, Matthew, and Marcus.[35]

Cheam was the original home of Cheam School which was formed in Whitehall in 1645 and later occupied Tabor Court from 1719 until 1934 when the school moved to Berkshire. Prince Philip attended the school in the years immediately preceding its move.[9]

That was true right from the start of his business career, in the early 1970s. Those same ties also led to his past involvement in two major scandals, one of them connected to Ezer Weizman. In the mid-1980s, when Weizman was a government minister, Ungar gave him $27,000 in small monthly installments. Years later, this story led to Weizman’s resignation from the presidency of the country. The second affair relates to Shula Zaken’s wiretappings of her boss, then-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, in which it was revealed that Ungar was supposed to pay Zaken $10,000 a month to refrain from testifying against Olmert. Another close friend of Ungar’s is minister Yoav Gallant (Likud), for whom Ungar purchased tickets for the World Cup finals in July 2018. His name also came up in the trial of businessman Nochi Dankner, because of a loan of 20 million shekels from Ungar. (Yael Belkin)

Cheam School is a mixed preparatory school located in Headley, in the civil parish of Ashford Hill with Headley in Hampshire. Originally a boys school, Cheam was founded in 1645 by George Aldrich.

History[edit]

The school started in Cheam, Surrey.

In the 19th century, the school was strictly for the sons of gentlemen only. One boy had to leave when his father was found to be a tradesman, with a shop in London selling cutlery.[1]

In 1934 the school moved to its present site on the borders of Hampshire and Berkshire, previously a country house known as Beenham Court, when its part of Surrey was developing from a quiet village into a busy suburb. The school has occupied its present home, with nearly 100 acres (40 ha) of grounds, since then.

Just before the move, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was a pupil there. His son, the future King Charles III, was later a pupil at the school.

Present day[edit]

There are four houses (known as divisions): Aldrich (yellow), Beck (green), Gilpin (red), and Tabor (blue). The school colours are red and blue.

Cheam educates both boys and girls between the ages of three and thirteen and takes day-pupils as well as boarders.

"Today Cheam School is a leading preparatory school at Headley, near Newbury in Berkshire, but as its name suggests, it began life in Cheam, Surrey. Its early history is associated with Whitehall through its seventeenth century founder, the Rev. George Aldrich, who is reputed to have lived here. George Aldrich was assistant curate of St Dunstan’s Church in Cheam for ten years from 1633. He served under the rector, the Rev. John Hackett, a fellow Royalist, who was later to became Bishop of Lichfield."

"The two clerics suffered for their views, and Royalist graffiti, possibly connected with Aldrich, dating from the time of the Civil War, may be found on the door now on display in Whitehall. By 1647, Aldrich was running a successful school in Cheam where the clean downland air provided a healthy escape from London’s Great Plague of 1665. It is possible that the school was held for a time in West Cheam Manor (now the site of Cheam Library). From 1719, the Rev. David Sanxay established the school on what is now the site of Tabor Court at the tope of the High Street, beside Dallas Road, where it remained for over 200 years. Prints showing the school at that time are on display in Whitehall."

He was tableted in Cheam Church as the "Descendant of William Aldrich of Norfolk who married Mary, daughter of Isabella of France and Edward II of England." Isabella was a daughter of Philip IV of France and sister of Charles IV.

Please note that Mary Plantagenet who was the daughter of Edward II and Isabella was born in 1310.She could not have been the mother of this George Aldrich.

Why George Aldrich’s nose is so important to Nasa’s success
Nasa has a volunteer panel of 25 people whose job is to smell items before they are sent into space. The mainstay of this group is George Aldrich. After 45 years on the panel, Aldrich’s nostrils have completed more than 900 odour tests for the agency (his closest rival has only reached the 600s). It’s a role that’s earned him nicknames ranging from ‘Nasa’s Chief Sniffer’ to ‘Nostrildamus’.
Aldrich is not a chemist and never attended university – he joined Nasa’s White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico in 1973, straight after graduating from high school. ‘My dad worked out here, and he called me and said they were looking for five temporary hires,’ Aldrich recalls. He immediately quit his job to take one of these provisional posts, before becoming a fireman guard for the site. It was his fire chief, who belonged to Nasa’s first odour panel, that got Aldrich into the smelling business at the tender age of 18. ‘He told me about it, since I was young and healthy, and said it was a great thing to do for the astronauts,’ Aldrich adds.
