The 12th century church of Saint Porphyrius was hit in a strike which caused 'huge damage' and 'many casualties' according to reports by Hamas.
The attack comes just days after an explosion at al-Ahli hospital which claimed the lives of up to 300 people and sparked a venomous blame game between Israel, Hamas and their allies.
In a statement Hamas said Israel had attacked the church, but this has not been independently confirmed at this stage. It's understood that at least two women have died and many others have been injured in the attack, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem said targeting the church 'constitutes a war crime'.

The Church of Saint Porphyrius or St. Porphyrius Church (Greek: Ιερός Ναός του Αγίου Πορφυρίου; Arabic: كنيسة القديس برفيريوس, romanized: Kanīsat al-Qadīs Burfīryūs) is a Greek Orthodox Christian church in Gaza City, State of Palestine, and the oldest active church in the city. Located in the Zaytun Quarter of the Old City of Gaza, it is named after the 5th-century bishop of Gaza, Saint Porphyrius, whose tomb is situated in the northeastern corner of the church.[1]

A church was built on the site as early as 425 AD,[2] but the construction of the current church was undertaken by the Crusaders in the 1150s or 1160s; they dedicated it to St Porphyrius. Records from the 15th century show that dedication of the church was also attested to the Virgin Mary.[3] In 1856, it was renovated.[1] There are some cornices and bases that date back to the Crusader period, but much of the other portions are later additions.[4]
In 2014, around 2,000 Palestinians fleeing Israeli bombings that had killed over 70 Palestinians took shelter in the Church of Saint Porphyrius. During the bombings, families slept in the corridors and rooms of the church and adjoining buildings, where they also had meals and medical care provided to them.[5][6] The church was again used as refuge from Israeli bombardment during the 2023 Israel-Hamas War. [7] On 19 October 2023, four Israeli missiles reportedly struck the campus where dozens to hundreds of Palestinians were taking shelter.[8][9] At least two fatalities were confirmed. Israeli officials said a wall of a church in the area was damaged after fighter jets struck a Hamas command and control center involved in the launching of rockets and mortars toward Israel. A statement by the Israeli military claimed that Hamas had "embedded its assets" in the area and used residents as human shields.[10]
On 19 October 2023, an Israeli airstrike during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war hit the Greek Orthodox Saint Porphyrius Church in Gaza City. The church was sheltering hundreds of displaced Palestinians at the time of the airstrike. The attack resulted in casualties of 8-17.[1][2][3]
The Airstrike[edit]
The Israeli military confirmed that the explosion resulted from one of its airstrikes.[2] Eyewitnesses noted that the air raid seemed to target a location near the church, which had become a place of refuge for numerous Christian and Muslim residents in Gaza. The airstrike caused damage to the church's exterior and led to the collapse of a nearby building. Several injured individuals were transported to the hospital.[1][4]
Reactions[edit]
The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem strongly denounced the attack, expressing their strong disapproval. They declared that the act of targeting churches and their facilities, including the shelters they offer to safeguard innocent citizens, particularly children and women who have been displaced from their homes due to Israeli airstrikes on residential areas, amounts to a war crime that demands attention.[1]

パレスチナの武装組織ハマス隊員が「戦闘麻薬」と呼ばれる「カプタゴン」（アンフェタミン系興奮剤フェネチリンを含む薬品の商品名）を服用している可能性が提起された。
聯合ニュースによると、イスラエルの現地放送「チャネル１２」は１９日（現地時間）、「戦闘後の死体として収拾されたハマスの隊員の財布からもカプタゴンの錠剤が見つかった」と報じた。７日にイスラエルを奇襲したハマス隊員が民間人を殺害して拉致する時に薬物を使用していた状態だったという疑惑が提起されていた。
アンフェタミンを主成分とするカプタゴンは「イスラム国（ＩＳ）麻薬」または「ジハード（イスラム聖戦）麻薬」とも呼ばれる。
カプタゴンを使用すれば数日間眠らなくても疲れを感じることがなく、自分のことを無敵だと考えて恐怖を感じにくくさせる。ＩＳ組織員が戦闘や殺傷行為をする際にはカプタゴンを服用しているという。
戦争で薬物使用は以前にも行われていた。ナチスドイツは第２次大戦当時、陸・海・空軍問わず兵士たちに強力な効果を持つ麻薬「ペルビチン」（メタンフェタミン系）を配給した。ドイツの時事週刊誌デア・シュピーゲルによると、１９４０年４～７月にドイツ軍に支給されたペルビチンは３５００万錠に達する。
第２次大戦当時、日本軍はメタンフェタミンを使用していたことがある。神風自殺特攻隊には出撃の時に酒に混ぜて飲ませていたという。米国も１９７５年に終わったベトナム戦争時には兵士の３５％がアンフェタミンおよびその他薬物の中毒を示していた。
