旧字の「鍼」は、「シン」という音を表す「咸」に「金へん」がついた文字で、いわゆる形声文字だと考えられます。新字の「針」は、取っ手のついた「はり」を表す「十」に「金へん」がついた文字で、いわゆる会意文字だと考えられます。旧字の「鍼」は漢の時代より以前から使われていましたが、新字の「針」は南北朝時代（5～6世紀頃）までしか遡れないようです。
