Drury Lane is a street on the eastern boundary of the Covent Garden area of London, running between Aldwych and High Holborn. The northern part is in the borough of Camden and the southern part in the City of Westminster. Drury Lane is part of London's West End Theatreland.

The Muffin Man resided on Drury Lane, according to the famous nursery rhyme.^[3]

The term "Drury Lane" is often used to refer to the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, which has in different incarnations been located in the street since the 17th century, even though today the main entrance is on Catherine Street. Also in Drury Lane is the Gillian Lynne Theatre.^[4] 173 Drury Lane was the location of the first J Sainsbury store. The store was opened in 1869 and the company is now one of the UK's largest retailers.^[5]

Drury Lane is a fictional detective created by Ellery Queen in the 1930s under the byline of Barnaby Ross. Later publications reverted to the Ellery Queen name. Lane is a deaf Shakespearean actor turned amateur sleuth.

Character overview[edit]

Lane was born in New Orleans on November 3, 1871. His father was a travelling American tragedian, and his mother an English music hall comic. Drury was born prematurely in a theater, his mother dying in childbirth. He was raised by his father, and made his acting debut aged 7. He was sixteen when his father died.

Lane became a highly celebrated Shakespearean actor, noted author of theatrical studies and biographies, and both a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and an honorary member of the French Legion of Honour. In 1928, he retired from the stage, having developed deafness.^[1] He became highly skilled in lip reading.

Upon his retirement, Lane decides to take up amateur sleuthing. He explains in The Tragedy of X, "I think I can bring to this pursuit a rather unique equipment. I have murdered on the stage countless times; emotionally I have suffered the agony of plotting, the torture of conscience. I have been, among others perhaps less noble, Macbeth, and I have been Hamlet. And like a child viewing a simple wonder for the first time, I have just realized that the world is full of Macbeths and Hamlets."^[2]

Lane resides in "The Hamlet", a castle overlooking the banks of the Hudson River, and accompanied by a small Elizabethan village, populated by people clad in authentic period garb and all bearing Shakespearean names. He is aided by Quacey (also known as Caliban and Quasimodo), his "hunchbacked" butler and formerly his makeup artist.^[3] Lane is also assisted by Inspector Thumm, and later by Thumm’s daughter Patience.^[4]

Physically, he is tall and slender, with white hair and greyish-green eyes. Despite being in his 60s, facially he looks much younger.^[5]

How tasty were the muffin man’s muffins?

In the 18th and 19th centuries, there were no laws to make sure that the ingredients in food were safe. To keep bread cheap and produce it in large quantities, some bakers would put things like chalk or plaster of Paris in it to make it look whiter and chunkier – yuck!

Some bakers even put alum in their bread as it was really cheap. Alum is an aluminium (metal) based powder which is now used in washing detergent! How do you think that bread tasted?

Where did the muffin man live?

The muffin man in the rhyme lives on Drury Lane, which is right next to Covent Garden in London. In the 18th century, it was an extremely poor area and it had a terrible reputation. Many people went there to drink, gamble and sometimes even commit crimes. The muffin man would have sold his muffins to many of the people who lived and worked nearby.

Today, the area is much nicer. It is very busy with tourists and there are lots of theatres and shops.
